“You deserted me but you left the pain When the sky turns into red I’ll be out here on my own Don’t forget I once called your heart my home”

You ever just look at someone, hear someone, and view the presence of someone and know, that they are a future star in the making? Tinashe, 21, is a R&B singer from Los Angeles, California (born in Lexington, Kentucky). She is still unknown to mainstream media and even her underground fan base is not too dense. The actress-turned-singer made her start with small roles in acting from doing some voice work on the movie Polar Express, to having a recurring role on Two and a Half Men. She began her transition into music when she joined the all girl band, The Stunners. After the group broke away, she pursued a solo career. She would then release the critically acclaimed mixtapes In Case We Die (2012), Reverie (2012), and just recently last year Black Water (2013).

Black Water sonically has a slower tempo rather than an up-beat tempo R&B tape. The beat choice on this mixtape reminds me of the type of beats The Weeknd and Frank Ocean were hopping on during their House of Balloons and Nostalgia Ultra days. You can tell she likes a little hip-hop feel to her songs and brings that new school R&B to it. On a couple of tracks, she uses more sensual  vocals as well  a higher pitch in her voice. Now I’m not really saying she’s this artist or not, and that she completely reminds me of these artists, but her presentation on this mixtape reminds me of Jhene Aiko (who is an up and coming artist herself) with a little mix of Ciara. Black Water only has one feature and that is rapper Travi$ Scott. This song, ‘Vulnerable,’ is one of my favorite songs on the tape along with ‘Midnight Sun,’ ‘Just A Taste,’ and ‘Ain’t Ready.’

“Bout a year in on this album one, Nearly done, Hopefully when I hit 21 I’ll be on”

Overall, I think you should give Tinashe a listen. She has the total package (singing+the look+dancing+acting) and shows a lot of potential. Recently she just released a single called ‘2 On’ featuring popular rapper ScHoolboy Q http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fc9g2tiJmvw. She still has some work to do, but don’t be surprised if in a couple of years, she’s one of the Top R&B Ladies in the game.
